List of Some Czech Mistakes Made by English Speakers

During years of teaching Czech, I have encountered lots of mistakes made by English speakers. Mistakes are mistakes, but thanks to them, we learn in our lives how to do things right :-)
Native English speakers tend to make mistakes in Czech and it is mainly because they do the “word-for-word” translation. Here is a List of them. Read about them, be aware of them and try not to make them again and finally tell them GOODBYE ;-)
Sorry, I’m late
Incorrect: Promiň, jsem pozdě.
Correct: Promiň, jdu pozdě.
How are you? I’m well
Incorrect: Jak se máš? Jsem dobrý.
Correct: Jak se máš? Mám se dobře.
Examples: Mám se výborně / super / fajn / špatně / hrozně.
I’m going to Italy
Incorrect: Jdu do Itálie. (to go on foot) ... It will be a long journey ;-)
Correct: Jedu do Itálie. (to go by transport)
How old are you? I’m 20.
Incorrect: Kolik je ti let? Jsem 20.
Correct: Kolik je ti let? Je mi 20.
I’ll be there in 5 minutes
Incorrect: Budu být tam za 5 minut.
Correct: Budu tam za 5 minut.
I’m on the train
Incorrect: Jsem na vlaku. (on the roof of train)
Correct: Jsem ve vlaku.
The rules: V/VE (in/on) + MEANS OF TRANSPORT (in the locative form)
Examples: Jsem ve vlaku / v autě / v autobusu / v metru / v trolejbusu.
I’m hot
Incorrect: Jsem horký.
Correct: Je mi horko.
Examples: Je mi zima (cold) / špatně (I’m not feeling well)/ lépe (better) / hůř (worse).
I like to play tennis
Incorrect: Mám rád hraju tenis.
Correct: Rád hraju tenis.
The rules: RÁD/A + VERBS (in the conjugated form, not the infinitive).
Examples: Rád sportuju / cestuju / jezdím na kole / čtu / vařím.
I’m excited
Incorrect: Jsem vzrušený.
Correct: Jsem nadšený / Těším se / Mám radost.
The rules: The adjective “vzrušený” has a rather sexual meaning in Czech. Use a different word/phrase instead.
Examples: Těším se do Ameriky (I’m excited about going to America) / Jsem nadšený z nové školy (I’m excited about my new school)
I love my Mum
Incorrect: Miluju svou maminku.
Correct: Mám moc rád svou maminku.
The rules: We do not use the verb “milovat” as much in Czech unless you want to express the romantic love. Use a different verb instead (Mít rád / Mít moc rád / Mít strašně rád).
Christmas is great!
Incorrect: Vánoce je skvělé!
Correct: Vánoce jsou skvělé!
The rules: The word “Vánoce”, Velikonoce (Easter) has only a plural form. Other Czech plurale tantum are: prázdniny, narozeniny, peníze, dveře, šaty etc.
Beer is 25 CZK
Incorrect: Pivo je 25 korun.
Correct: Pivo stojí 25 korun.
The rules: noun + stojí (costs)
I’m studying
Incorrect: Já jsem studuju.
Correct: Studuju.
He goes by plane
Incorrect: Jede letadlem. Verb JET (to go on the ground + MEANS OF TRANSPORT (in the instrumental form)
Correct: Letí letadlem. Verb LETĚT (to fly + MEANS OF TRANSPORT (in the instrumental form)
Examples: Jedu autem / vlakem / autobusem x Letím letadlem / raketou / helikoptérou.
